Luanda, Angola – 15th November 2024* – Angola marked a significant milestone in its 50th year of independence with the opening of the Cuanza Norte General Hospital, the third to be inaugurated within a year. The new facility, a key component of the country’s healthcare expansion, was officially opened by President João Gonçalves Lourenço in a ceremony attended by government officials, religious leaders, and traditional authorities.
The Cuanza Norte General Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility spanning 15,000 square meters and 200 beds, is designed to serve over half a million residents in Cuanza Norte and neighboring provinces. The hospital offers advanced healthcare services, including oncology, surgery, pediatrics, maternity care, and adult and neonatal intensive care units (ICUs). Equipped with cutting-edge diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, and a hospital waste processing unit, the facility aims to provide high-quality care while promoting environmental sustainability.
The Cuanza Norte hospital is the third of three major healthcare projects completed by Mitrelli, an international development company, in partnership with the Angolan government. The two previous hospitals—the General Hospital of Cuanza Sul and the Bengo General Hospital—were inaugurated in late 2023 and 2024, respectively. Together, these hospitals are part of an ambitious plan to improve healthcare access for over 3 million people across Angola, with a combined capacity of 600 beds and more than 100,000 square meters of healthcare infrastructure. These projects have also created close to 4,000 new jobs.

Haim Taib, Founder and President of Mitrelli, highlighted the significance of these healthcare facilities, stating that “a strong healthcare system is foundational to the growth and prosperity of any nation, especially in regions with the world’s fastest-growing populations.” He emphasized that accessible, high-quality healthcare improves public health, fosters economic resilience, and contributes to social stability.
Rodrigo Manso, Country General Manager of Mitrelli Angola, expressed pride in the achievement, noting that the hospital inaugurations represent a long-term commitment to Angola’s future.
“We’re incredibly proud to inaugurate our third hospital within a year, underscoring our dedication to sustainable healthcare solutions that align with Angola’s development goals,” he said.
This healthcare expansion is also a crucial part of Angola’s broader economic growth strategy, focusing on training local professionals and fostering the long-term sustainability of the national healthcare system. Mitrelli and the Angolan government are working together to build a resilient healthcare infrastructure that serves the nation’s needs for generations to come by providing world-class medical facilities and fostering talent development.
The inauguration of the Cuanza Norte General Hospital reflects Angola’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of its citizens while advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on health, economic growth, and sustainable communities. With these new facilities, Angola is setting a high standard for healthcare development on the African continent.
