LUSAKA, Zambia, April 1, 2025 – Merck Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, has once again reinforced its commitment to empowering women and girls across Africa as it marks International Women’s Day 2025. In collaboration with the First Ladies of Africa, who serve as the foundation’s Ambassadors, and key government ministries, Merck Foundation continues its 13-year legacy of driving impactful development programs to foster gender equality and education.
A Legacy of Women’s Empowerment
Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and recognized as One of the Most Influential African Women for six consecutive years (2019–2024), expressed her commitment to the cause, stating:
“Happy International Women’s Day to all the remarkable women and girls worldwide! Empowering women and girls is at the heart of everything we do at Merck Foundation. I recognize their immense potential to succeed and lead in any field they choose. However, many still face barriers, particularly in underserved communities, where opportunities are scarce.”
Transforming Women’s Healthcare through Education
A significant highlight of Merck Foundation’s efforts has been its commitment to enhancing women’s healthcare capacity through education. Dr. Kelej proudly shared:
“Out of the 2,230 scholarships awarded across 52 countries in 44 critical and underserved specialties, nearly 50% – a total of 1,046 scholarships – have been granted to female medical graduates. These women are being empowered to become future healthcare experts and leaders.”
Additionally, the foundation has awarded over 680 scholarships to young doctors dedicated to advancing women’s reproductive, sexual health, and fertility care.
Continuing the Commitment Beyond Women’s Day
Merck Foundation’s initiatives are not limited to a single day’s celebration but are ongoing efforts to uplift women throughout the year. The foundation is paving the way for a more inclusive and empowered future for women and girls in Africa and beyond by providing access to education, healthcare training, and economic opportunities.
