The surgeries were supported through the Social Health Authority (SHA), reducing patients’ financial burden and enhancing access to specialized kidney care in line with the country’s Universal Health Coverage goals.
In a major milestone for Kenya’s healthcare system, the Kenya University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) has successfully conducted its first two kidney transplant surgeries, marking the launch of its newly established renal transplant program. The surgeries, performed on May 7 and 8, 2025, represent a leap forward in the country’s quest to expand access to specialized care under its Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.
According to hospital officials, both transplant recipients and donors are recovering well. The announcement was made during a press briefing led by Dr. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for Medical Services, who praised the hospital team for this groundbreaking achievement.
“This milestone is a testament to our commitment to building capacity within our healthcare system and ensuring that life-saving procedures like kidney transplants are accessible to Kenyans,” Dr. Oluga stated. Acting CEO Ms. Zeinab Gura and Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Senator Kembi Gitura, joined him.
The road to this achievement has been years in the making. Over the past three years, KUTRRH has invested in training medical personnel, including at Apollo Hospital in India, acquiring advanced medical equipment, and forging key partnerships. The transplants were conducted in collaboration with kidney specialists from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), who are also mentoring the KUTRRH team as they build local expertise.
Encouragingly, the hospital is preparing for additional transplants: one donor-recipient pair is ready for surgery, while eight more are currently undergoing evaluation at the transplant clinic.
Crucially, the surgeries were supported by the Social Health Authority (SHA), which plays a pivotal role in reducing patients’ financial burdens. By covering the cost of complex procedures like kidney transplants, SHA is helping Kenya move closer to equitable and inclusive healthcare for all.
The successful launch of the kidney transplant program at KUTRRH underscores the government’s strategic focus on localizing specialized treatment and reducing the need for costly overseas medical travel. It also reflects Kenya’s broader health policy goals of building sustainable, high-quality healthcare infrastructure across the country.
