In a devastating turn of events, Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima, aged 51, along with nine other individuals, lost their lives in a fatal plane crash. The small military aircraft they were traveling in succumbed to adverse weather conditions, crashing in a mountainous region in the northern part of the country, President Lazarus Chakwera confirmed on Tuesday.
President Chakwera conveyed the grim news, stating that after more than 24 hours of intense search efforts amidst challenging terrain near the city of Mzuzu, the wreckage of the missing plane had been located.
“Words cannot describe how heartbreaking this is, and I can only imagine how much pain and anguish you all must be feeling.” He called Chilima “a good man, a devoted father and husband, a patriotic citizen who served his country with distinction and a formidable vice president.”
The victims’ remains are now being transported to Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, for funeral arrangements. Among the passengers were members of Vice President Chilima’s staff and security detail, including former First Lady Shanil Dzimbiri, the ex-wife of former President Bakili Muluzi, along with three crew members.
The ill-fated flight, which departed from Lilongwe en route to Mzuzu, was halted by adverse weather conditions, prompting air traffic controllers to advise against landing at Mzuzu’s airport due to poor visibility. However, before the aircraft could return to Lilongwe, contact with air traffic control was lost, and the plane vanished from radar screens.

The search for the missing plane mobilized hundreds of soldiers, police officers, and forest rangers, combing through the dense forests and hilly terrain surrounding Mzuzu. Ultimately, the wreckage was discovered in the Chikangawa Forest south of Mzuzu, shrouded in thick fog and bearing the remnants of the tragic incident. The president described the aircraft as a small, propeller-driven plane operated by the Malawian armed forces.
As Malawi grapples with the shock and grief of this loss, the nation stands united in mourning the lives cut short in this tragic accident. The loss of Vice President Chilima and the other victims leaves an indelible void in the fabric of Malawi, as the nation remembers their contributions and honors their memory.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, as authorities work to uncover the circumstances that led to this heartbreaking event.
