Visit Visalia to Celebrate Autism Month with a Commitment to Inclusion

As April approaches, Visalia, known as the nation’s first certified autism destination, is gearing up to celebrate Autism Awareness Month . Underscoring its commitment to inclusion, Visit Visalia, along with local tourism partners, highlights its initiative: “Every day in our community is Autism Acceptance Day.”

Recent results of a survey conducted by Autism Travel show that 78% of parents with autistic children refrain from traveling, but 94% express their willingness to travel to do so if autism-certified facilities were available. Recognizing this need, Visalia has been a leader in education and initiatives to welcome neurodiverse travelers, earning recognition as the nation’s first certified autism destination.

Sherrie Bakke, Executive Director of Visit Visalia expressed the city’s commitment, saying, “Every April, Visalia recognizes autism. Strengthen our commitment to people with autism and sensory adventurers every day, month and year. A trip to the magnificent Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks offers health benefits and a full sensory experience for every member of the family.” Visalia travel partners are equally committed to empowering travelers of all abilities. Properties undergoing special training provided by the International Accreditation and Continuing Education Standard (IBCCES) will become a certified autism center.

In light of Autism Awareness Month, Visalia invites individuals and families from all walks of life to experience the beauty of its home destination and nearby national parks, providing an inviting environment for all travelers.

Visalia continues its pioneering efforts in inclusive tourism and is an excellent example to communities nationwide in promoting acceptance, understanding and accessibility of people with autism and sensory sensitivity.
