Gen-Z revolutionary as Kenyans Protest Over 2024 Financial Bill: Two dead, over 200 injured

Nairobi, Kenya – Nationwide protests erupted in Kenya on Wednesday as citizens took to the streets to express their opposition to the proposed Financial Bill 2024. The bill, which includes various tax increases and austerity measures, has sparked widespread anger and discontent among the public, who are already grappling with rising living costs and economic challenges.

Thousands of demonstrators marched through major cities, including Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, chanting slogans and carrying placards denouncing the government’s financial policies. The protests, initially peaceful, escalated as the police used live bullets in addition to teargas and water cannons resulting in 2 deaths, over 200 injured and many arrested.

According to local reports, police used tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the crowds. The Kenya Red Cross reported that several people were injured, and at least six individuals were shot during the confrontations. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and confusion as protesters sought cover from the gunfire.

The Kenyan government has defended the Financial Bill 2024, arguing that the proposed measures are necessary to address the country’s fiscal deficit and stimulate economic growth. However, critics argue that the bill disproportionately impacts low- and middle-income citizens, exacerbating the existing economic inequalities.

Human rights organizations have condemned the use of excessive force by the police, calling for an independent investigation into the incidents. “The government’s heavy-handed response to peaceful protests is unacceptable and a violation of fundamental human rights,” said a spokesperson for Amnesty International Kenya.

The proposed taxes were projected to raise $2.7 billion which is equivalent to 1.9% of GDP and reduce the budget deficit from 5.7% to 3.3% of GDP.

The ongoing unrest highlights the deep-seated frustration among Kenyans regarding economic governance and the perceived lack of accountability from their leaders.

The international community is closely monitoring the developments in Kenya, with concerns growing over the potential for further violence and instability. Diplomatic missions have urged the Kenyan government to engage in dialogue with the protesters and seek a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

The Financial Bill 2024 continues to be a contentious issue, with its fate uncertain as public pressure mounts. The government’s next steps will be crucial in determining whether it can restore order and address the grievances of its citizens.
