Last week, an EU military mobile training team commenced its first training activities in Benin as part of the European Union Security and Defence Initiative (EU SDI) in the Gulf of Guinea. The team arrived in Benin to share expertise on ground-air cooperation with their Benin counterparts.

The Benin authorities ensured a smooth start to the training by fulfilling all necessary preconditions. This specialized training is crucial for enhancing the capabilities of the military and requires careful planning and execution. The initial phase of the training, held in Cotonou, focuses on establishing a common theoretical foundation. This groundwork is essential for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of subsequent hands-on training sessions. Moreover, it fosters camaraderie between the participating military units, laying a strong foundation for future cooperation.
In the upcoming period, the training will transition to Ouidah and emphasize practical applications of the knowledge gained.
The EU Security and Defence Initiative in the Gulf of Guinea aims to bolster the security and defense capabilities of countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, and Benin. The initiative seeks to address security threats and mitigate the spillover of insecurity from the Sahel into the coastal states of West Africa. It consists of both civilian and military pillars, enabling the EU to provide tailored support to partner countries based on their specific needs. This support includes expertise and modular instruments delivered in a timely manner.
The EU SDI complements other ongoing EU activities, including support for maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
